Jennifer Young - Project Literacy Spokesperson and Director, Innovation and Partnerships
For the past 15 years, Jennifer has worked across public, private and nonprofit sectors to advance solutions to large-scale social and public policy challenges. At Pearson, she oversees the company’s programs and partnerships for its global social impact campaigns, including Project Literacy.
Before Pearson, Jennifer worked at Human Rights Watch, elevating issues related to women’s rights and juvenile justice through targeted partnerships and advocacy. She also co-founded the Halifax International Security Forum—a global network of public and private sector leaders who come together for dialogue and action on peace and security issues. She also oversaw corporate and multilateral partnerships for the National Democratic Institute (NDI). She was a Fulbright Scholar in Chile and holds a B.A. in International Affairs and an M.P.A. in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy.
Julia Firestone - Manager, Social Impact Partnerships, Pearson
Julia is a community builder and leadership coach who manages Project Literacy's Community of Practice and partner network of over 100 organizations across the literacy field. Her work at Pearson emphasizes a Diversity & Inclusion lens as an Advocate within the company and she can often be found running braintrusts and spreading innovative approaches to others in the company.
Previously, Julia drove the growth of NGOs focused on EdTech through programs, strategy, and fundraising. She has a master’s degree from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from Hampshire College.
Luisa Gockel - Manager, Social Impact Partnerships, Pearson
Luisa is a business development and partnerships specialist with a background in journalism and social research. She has 17 years of experience in the communication and innovation fields and has spent the past 10 years working in the non-profit sector in both the UK and South America. Luisa joined Pearson in 2017 to manage the company’s social impact partnerships as part of Project Literacy, Pearson’s flagship social impact campaign. Before joining Pearson, Luisa was Head of Business Development at Apps for Good, the fastest growing tech education charity in the UK. She has designed and managed complex social impact partnerships with some of the world’s most innovative companies such as Google, Thomson Reuters, Samsung, Facebook, and Barclaycard.
Sara Perkins - Senior Manager, Digital Communities, Social Impact
Sara has a portfolio career spanning some 25 years in the music, publishing and entertainment industries. It began with a record deal aged 17, and spans a stint in San Francisco as a founding member of Rocket Network, one of the first-wave start-up audio companies (eventually sold to Avid Technologies), as well as years spent managing the digital communities of some of the world’s most recognizable brands such as Mills & Boon and Disney.
Sara also trained as a Strategic Futurist and was part of a future think-tank at Disney, focusing on education. She is passionate about creative strategy work, understanding audience motivations and matching this to digital content. In her role as Senior Manager of Digital Communities at Project Literacy, she is an enthusiastic advocate of 360-thinking across the digital eco-system including web, CRM, PR and social, taking a holistic approach to online community building.
Sara also loves writing and has won-awards for her lifestyle blog as well as being a contributor to the Huffington Post with a column on creativity, ‘Catching the Comet’s Tail’.
