Team Read

Mission: Teens tutoring kids to achieve reading success

Team Read is a year-round reading tutoring program that pairs carefully trained 8th-12th grade reading coaches with struggling 2nd-3rd grade readers for 1-on-1 reading tutoring sessions. Our goal is for all our 2nd-3rd grade students to be better, more confident readers and for our teen reading coaches to gain critical life and work skills. We partner with Seattle Public Schools, Highline Public Schools and Seattle Public Library to deliver the program to over 1,000 2nd and 3rd graders and teens annually.

Team Read operates in elementary schools in Seattle and Highline school districts where assessments show that 2nd and 3rd graders need intensive reading support beyond the classroom. Approximately 90% of our 2nd and 3rd graders are students of color, 90% come from low-income families and 50% are English Language Learners. These students often have the fewest resources outside the classroom and may face the greatest barriers to academic success. Our ultimate goal is for all our 2nd and 3rd grade students to be reading at grade level.

We recruit 8th -12th graders at Seattle and Highline middle and high schools and screen and train them to provide reading support aligned with classroom instruction that builds their students reading comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. Our teen coaches are drawn from the same neighborhoods as their students and are as diverse as their students. The teens report that they gain a sense of accomplishment, patience, responsibility, and appreciation for their teachers-in fact, 30% of the teen coaches report an interest in teaching as a career. Teen coaches can earn service hours, or hourly pay, or save money for college (hourly pay + a 50% match by Team Read).

Since 1998 Team Read has served over 18,000 students.
