The Hackney Pirates is an enterprising charity working to develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance of young people facing disadvantage in Hackney, so that they achieve both in school and in the world beyond.
Since being founded in 2010, The Hackney Pirates has worked with over 650 local pupils, delivering over 20,000 hours of learning activities. The organisation is led and staffed by experienced teachers, who are supported by a community of over 300 trained volunteers.
We work entirely with young people who have been referred by teachers in our 14 partner schools. At present, our programme focuses on children in years 5, 6 and 7. We look forward to expanding our reach in future years. Young Pirates take part in our learning sessions after school, once a week for one year. We also run additional holiday workshops for them. All sessions take place in our unique out-of-school learning centre, The Ship of Adventures.
